These numbers assume you invoice clients directly. If your work comes through Upwork, Fiverr, or Freelancer.com, run the same amounts through the Net Income Explorer, which stacks the platform fee on top of each country's tax and shows what you truly keep.
Why Compare Freelance Tax Across Countries?
Many digital nomads and remote workers choose their base country partly on tax efficiency. Southeast Asia offers some of the lowest freelance tax rates in the world, but they vary significantly โ from 0.5% flat tax in Indonesia to progressive rates in Thailand. Use this tool to quickly compare which country gives you the best take-home pay for your income level.
Note: this comparison uses default resident tax settings for each country. Actual results may differ based on your residency status, deductions, and tax elections. For a personalized calculation, visit each country's individual calculator.
How Each Country Taxes Freelancers
Every country in this comparison handles freelance income differently. Here is a plain-language summary of what the numbers mean for each one.
๐ต๐ญ Philippines โ best for the 8% flat option
Filipino freelancers earning under โฑ250,000 a year pay zero income tax. Above that, you can elect the 8% flat tax on gross receipts or use the graduated brackets (15% up to โฑ400,000, rising to 35% above โฑ8,000,000). The flat option is simple and often wins for mid-to-high earners with few deductible expenses, while the graduated route suits those with significant SSS, PhilHealth, and Pag-IBIG contributions to deduct. Try both in the Philippines calculator.
๐ฎ๐ฉ Indonesia โ best for small businesses and UMKM
Indonesia's PPh Final scheme charges just 0.5% of gross turnover for qualifying small businesses, making it the lowest headline rate in this comparison. Freelancers who don't qualify can use the NPPN norm method, which deems only 35โ50% of gross income as taxable depending on profession (50% for consultants, 45% for IT professionals, 40% for writers), or the standard progressive brackets after the Rp54,000,000 PTKP personal exemption. Non-residents face a flat 20%. Details in the Indonesia calculator.
๐ฒ๐พ Malaysia โ best for steady mid-range earners
Malaysia's progressive scale starts gently โ 0% on the first RM5,000 of chargeable income, 1% up to RM20,000, and only reaching 19% at RM100,000. Residents get an automatic RM9,000 individual relief, plus optional reliefs for EPF contributions (RM4,000), insurance (RM3,000), lifestyle spending (RM2,500), medical (RM8,000), and education (RM7,000). The top rate of 30% only applies above RM2,000,000. Non-residents pay a flat 24% with no reliefs. Model your reliefs in the Malaysia calculator.
๐น๐ญ Thailand โ best for deductible expenses
Thailand gives freelancers a standard deduction of 50% of gross income, capped at เธฟ100,000, before progressive rates even start โ plus a เธฟ60,000 personal allowance, เธฟ60,000 for a non-working spouse, and เธฟ30,000 per child (up to three). After those deductions, the brackets run from 0% (first เธฟ150,000 of taxable income) to 35% above เธฟ5,000,000. The generous front-loaded deductions mean effective rates stay low well into middle incomes. Check your numbers in the Thailand calculator.
๐ป๐ณ Vietnam โ best for families with dependents
Vietnam's resident freelancers get a personal deduction of โซ132,000,000 per year plus โซ52,800,000 for each dependent, then pay monthly-assessed progressive rates from 5% to 35%. Income at or below โซ100,000,000 a year is entirely tax-free in 2025 (โซ200,000,000 under the new 2026 rules, which also compress the seven brackets into five). Non-residents pay a simple 10% flat rate. Compare both tax years in the Vietnam calculator.
๐ฎ๐ณ India โ best for presumptive taxation
Indian professionals can use Section 44ADA presumptive taxation, which treats 50% of gross receipts as expenses automatically โ no bookkeeping required. Under the new regime, taxable income up to โน1,200,000 ends up with zero tax after the Section 87A rebate, and the top 30% rate only applies above โน2,400,000. A 4% health and education cess applies on top of any tax due. The old regime allows Section 80C and 80D deductions instead. Test both regimes in the India calculator.
How to Choose Which Countries to Compare
Start with the country you live in now, then compare it against the country you're considering moving to. The winner banner shows the effective rate gap in percentage points โ a 5-point gap on a $40,000 income is roughly $2,000 a year in your pocket.
Run the comparison at your actual expected income, not a round number. Tax systems are progressive, so the country that wins at a low income may lose at a high one. The income-level table below the results shows exactly where the crossover happens.
Finally, remember that tax is only one input. Visa rules, cost of living, healthcare, and banking access all matter just as much when choosing a base. Use this tool to narrow the shortlist, then research the practical side.
Common Questions
Does this tool account for double taxation agreements?
No. The comparison shows each country's domestic tax on a resident freelancer in isolation. If you split time between countries or earn foreign-sourced income, a double taxation agreement (DTA) may reduce what you owe. Consult a cross-border tax adviser for your specific situation.
Why does it use default settings?
Defaults keep the comparison apples-to-apples: resident taxpayer, standard tax election, no optional deductions beyond what every filer gets. Your real liability could be lower once you add dependents, reliefs, or business expenses โ the individual country calculators let you model those.
Which tax year do the rates apply to?
The engines use the 2025 rules for each country (Vietnam also includes the new 2026 bracket system in its own calculator). Tax law changes often, so always confirm against the official tax authority before filing.
Can I compare more than two countries?
The tool compares two at a time so the side-by-side breakdown stays readable. To survey all six, run a few pairings starting with your most likely base, or read the summary on our freelance tax rates page.
