Freelancer Tax by Country in Asia: What You Actually Keep

Six countries, three marketplaces, 18 scenarios. A hub to every country × platform combination we compute, fees, tax, withdrawals, and the direct-client comparison.

When a client pays you through Upwork, Fiverr, or Freelancer.com, two things happen before the money reaches your bank account. First the marketplace takes its commission, 10%, 20%, or 10%(or a US$5 minimum), depending on the platform. Then the country where you're resident takes its income tax, on whatever actually reaches you. Both deductions use different rules in every country, which is why "what you keep" has no single answer.

We built the Net Income Explorer to answer it concretely. It takes a gross invoice, subtracts the platform fee, runs the remainder through each country's real tax engine, and even accounts for withdrawal and currency-conversion costs. Every page also shows the same invoice paid by a direct client with zero platform fee, the benchmark that reveals what a marketplace is truly costing you.

This post is the hub. Pick your country, pick your platform, and see the full walkthrough.

Philippines, 8% flat vs graduated rates

Filipino freelancers under the 8% flat option on self-employment income are taxed on gross receipts, expenses like platform fees are irrelevant under that option, a fact many discover too late. If you're on graduated rates, platform fees are claimable business costs instead. This split is the single most important tax decision a Philippine freelancer makes.

Indonesia, three methods, three very different answers

Indonesian freelancers can be taxed by PPh Final UMKM at 0.5% of gross turnover, by NPPN deemed profit, or by progressive UU HPP rates on actual expenses. Under the final-rate method the fee is again irrelevant to tax; under progressive rates, platform fees and other costs genuinely cut your taxable income. The method that suits a 60 million rupiah year is not the one that suits 250 million.

Malaysia, fees are a real deduction under Form B

Malaysia is among the friendliest for platform fees: under the wholly-and-exclusively rule on Form B, market commissions are legitimate business expenses that lower your taxable profit. The individual relief (RM9,000) softens smaller incomes. The real pain point for Malaysians is that the marginal rate climbs fast once you pass RM70,000, a high-grossing freelancer feels every ringgit of fee.

Thailand, the 50% deduction that changes everything

Thai freelancers benefit from a flat 50% professional deduction for business income, no proof of expenses required. With that structural break, most mid-tier earning freelancers land close to or outside the first taxable slab. Fiverr's 20% can matter more than Thailand's income tax for many earners, the exact inversion the comparison rows make visible.

Vietnam, the tax-free threshold and 2026 brackets

Vietnam's personal deduction (₫132 million for the taxpayer, plus ₫52.8 million per dependent) plus insurance keeps many freelancers entirely below the tax line in 2025, and the new five-bracket schedule from 2026, with a ₫200 million tax-free threshold, reshapes the math again. The pages compute both years against the same fee structure.

India, 44ADA and the disappearing deduction

India's freelancers reap the benefit of presumptive Section 44ADA: pay tax on 50% of gross receipts, keep the other half untaxed as deemed expense. The trade-off is blunt, under 44ADA the platform fee cannot be deducted, because the 50% assumption already swallowed it. A taxpayer who switches to actual-expense reporting can claim the fee, but four in five freelancers find the presumptive route worth more.

The direct-client benchmark

Every combination page closes with a fourth row: the same invoice paid by a direct client, no platform fee. That row exists because the fee is never the only cost, platform-specific withdrawal charges, currency conversion spreads (roughly 2–3% on PayPal, less on Wise), and the hours spent managing a profile all stack on top. On a US$100,000 career the difference between a 20% platform and a direct client routinely runs to five figures. The explorer pages quantify it in your own currency.
