Freelancer Tax FAQ

Answers to the most common questions about freelance taxes, visas, and platform fees across 6 Asian countries.

General

Do I need to pay tax as a freelancer in Asia?
Yes, in most countries. Freelance income is considered taxable income regardless of whether it comes from local or foreign clients. Each country has different thresholds, rates, and filing requirements.
Can I work remotely on a tourist visa?
Technically, most tourist visas don't permit work. However, working remotely for foreign clients is a grey area in many Southeast Asian countries. There's generally no enforcement against digital nomads earning from overseas, but it's not explicitly legal either. Always check current immigration rules.
What is the 183-day rule?
The 183-day rule determines tax residency in many countries. If you spend 183 days or more in a country within a calendar year, you're typically considered a tax resident and may be subject to tax on your worldwide income.
What is a good freelance hourly rate in Southeast Asia?
It depends on your role and target market. For Southeast Asian freelancers working with international clients: Web Developers $20-80/hr, Designers $15-50/hr, Writers $10-40/hr, Virtual Assistants $8-25/hr. Working directly with Western clients typically pays 2-3x more than platform rates.

Philippines

What tax option should Filipino freelancers choose, 8% or graduated?
It depends on your income level. The 8% flat tax is generally better if your gross receipts are below PHP 1,000,000. Above that, graduated rates may save you more. Use our tax calculator to compare both options at your income level.
Do I pay Philippine tax on income from foreign clients?
Yes. If you're a Philippine tax resident, income from foreign clients is taxable in the Philippines. Source-based taxation applies, all income earned by a resident is subject to Philippine income tax.

India

What is Section 44ADA?
Section 44ADA is a presumptive taxation scheme for specified professionals (including freelancers) in India. It allows you to declare 50% of your gross receipts as taxable income without needing to maintain detailed books of accounts or prove expenses.
New Regime vs Old Regime, which is better for Indian freelancers?
Under Section 44ADA, the New Regime is typically better for most freelancers because of lower tax rates at lower income brackets. However, if you have significant deductions under Section 80C, 80D, etc., the Old Regime may be more beneficial. Compare both at our India tax calculator.
