Thailand LTR Visa for Digital Nomads: Tax Benefits Explained

The Long-Term Resident visa gives qualifying remote workers 10-year stay with a flat 17% tax rate. Here's who's eligible.

Thailand's Long-Term Resident (LTR) Visa is one of Southeast Asia's most attractive programs for high-earning remote workers. It offers a 10-year visa with significant tax benefits — but the eligibility bar is high.

Who Qualifies for the LTR "Work-from-Thailand Professional" Category?

  • Annual income: Minimum USD 80,000/year (or USD 40,000 with a master's degree or above, or owning intellectual property)
  • Employer: Must work for a publicly-listed company or a private company with at least 3 years of operations
  • Experience: At least 5 years of work experience in your field
  • Health insurance: Coverage of at least USD 50,000 or social security in Thailand

Tax Benefits of the LTR Visa

Benefit Details
Flat income tax rate17% on Thailand-sourced income (instead of progressive up to 35%)
Foreign income exemptionForeign-sourced income brought into Thailand is tax-exempt for LTR holders
Work permitAutomatic digital work permit — no separate application needed
90-day reportingOnce per year instead of every 90 days
Dependent visasSpouse and children can get dependent LTR visas

The foreign income exemption is the biggest benefit. While regular Thai tax residents are taxed on foreign income brought into Thailand (since 2024), LTR visa holders are exempt from this rule.

LTR vs DTV Visa

Thailand also introduced the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) in 2024 — a more accessible option for digital nomads:

Feature LTR Visa DTV Visa
Duration10 years5 years

Foreign income taxExemptTaxable (if brought in)

For most freelancers earning under USD 80,000, the DTV is the more practical choice. But if you qualify for the LTR, the foreign income tax exemption alone can save you significant money.
