How to Calculate Your Freelance Rate
Your freelance rate should cover three things: your desired take-home income, your business expenses, and taxes. A common mistake is to simply divide a salary by 2,080 hours (40 hrs x 52 weeks) — but freelancers don't bill 40 hours a week and don't work every week of the year.
This calculator uses the reverse-calculation method: start with the income you want, add your business costs, then divide by the actual billable hours you can realistically work. The result is your minimum viable rate.
What Are Realistic Billable Hours?
Even if you work 40 hours a week, you can't bill all of them. You spend time on proposals, invoicing, marketing, and admin. Realistic billable hours for solo freelancers:
- Full-time freelancer: 20-25 billable hours/week
- Part-time side hustle: 8-12 billable hours/week
- Agency/consultant: 30-35 billable hours/week
What's a Good Freelance Hourly Rate?
It depends on your location and industry, but here are rough benchmarks for Southeast Asian freelancers working with international clients:
| Role | USD/hour |
|---|---|
| Graphic Designer | $15-50 |
| Web Developer | $20-80 |
| Content Writer | $10-40 |
| Virtual Assistant | $8-25 |
| UI/UX Designer | $25-70 |
| Data Analyst | $20-60 |
Freelancers who work directly with US/European clients typically earn 2-3x more than those working through platforms like Upwork or Fiverr. Your rate should reflect the value you deliver, not just your time.
