How to Register a Tax Code for Freelancers in Vietnam

Everything you need to know about getting your Tax Code (Mã số thuế) as a self-employed individual in Vietnam — from registration to e-filing.

If you're earning freelance income in Vietnam, the first step to tax compliance is getting your Tax Code (Mã số thuế). This unique identifier is required for all tax filings, payments, and interactions with the General Department of Taxation (GDT).

Who Needs a Tax Code?

You need a Tax Code if:

  • You earn business income as an individual (hộ kinh doanh cá thể)
  • Your annual revenue exceeds VND 100 million
  • You want to issue official invoices to clients
  • You're employed but also have freelance income on the side

Even if your income is below VND 100 million and you're technically exempt from PIT, having a Tax Code makes it easier to comply with local regulations and issue proper documentation to clients.

How to Register

There are two ways to register for a Tax Code in Vietnam:

Method 1: Through Your Employer (If Employed)

If you're currently employed, your employer should already have registered you for a Tax Code. Check your pay slip or ask your HR department. You can also verify your Tax Code at tracuunnt.gdt.gov.vn.

Method 2: Self-Registration for Freelancers

  1. Visit your local tax office: Go to the tax office in the district where you reside (Chi cục Thuế quận/huyện).
  2. Prepare documents:
    • ID card / Citizen ID (CCCD) — copy
    • Household registration (Sổ hộ khẩu) or temporary residence registration — copy
    • Tax registration form (Mẫu 05-ĐK-TCT)
  3. Submit application: Hand in your documents at the reception desk. Processing typically takes 3-5 working days.
  4. Receive your Tax Code: You'll be notified by SMS or can collect it in person.

Method 3: Online Registration (if available)

The GDT has been expanding e-services. Check thuedientu.gdt.gov.vn to see if online registration is available in your province.

Registering as a Household Business (Hộ Kinh Doanh)

For larger-scale freelancers, registering as a hộ kinh doanh (individual business household) may be beneficial:

  • Register at the People's Committee (UBND) of your district
  • Requires a business name, address, and description of business activities
  • Allows you to issue official invoices (hóa đơn)
  • Subject to license fee (lệ phí môn bài): VND 1,000,000/year (or VND 300,000 for small-scale)

Setting Up E-Filing

After getting your Tax Code, set up electronic tax filing:

  1. Visit thuedientu.gdt.gov.vn
  2. Register for an e-filing account using your Tax Code
  3. Link your bank account for electronic tax payments
  4. Download the e-filing software (HTKK — Hỗ Trợ Kê Khai) from the GDT website
