Upwork Malaysia: Tax Guide for Malaysian Freelancers
LHDN filing, SSM registration, and how to handle Upwork income properly as a Malaysian freelancer.
Malaysia has a growing Upwork freelancer community, but the tax obligations aren't always clear. Here's a practical guide for Malaysian freelancers earning through the platform.
Is Upwork Income Taxable in Malaysia?
Yes. All income earned by Malaysian residents is taxable in Malaysia, regardless of whether the client is domestic or overseas. Upwork earnings must be declared on your Form B tax return as business income.
Upwork does not withhold Malaysian tax — your earnings arrive in full (minus Upwork's 10% service fee). You are responsible for declaring and paying the correct tax to LHDN.
SSM Registration
If you operate under a business name (e.g., "KL Digital Studio" instead of your personal name), you must register with SSM within 30 days. The registration costs RM 60/year and can be done online at ssm-einfo.my.
Even if you use your personal name, SSM registration is recommended because it:
- Allows you to open a business bank account
- Makes tax filing easier with clear separation of income
- Provides legitimacy when dealing with clients
Claiming Business Expenses
As a freelancer filing Form B, you can deduct business expenses including:
- Internet and phone: Business-use portion of monthly bills
- Equipment: Laptop, monitor, keyboard (via capital allowances)
- Software subscriptions: Figma, Adobe, development tools
- Coworking space: Monthly membership fees
- EPF contributions: Voluntary self-employed contributions (tax relief up to RM 4,000)
- Life insurance/takaful: Up to RM 3,000
Receiving Payments in Malaysia
| Method | Fees | Processing Time |
|---|---|---|
| Direct to Malaysian Bank (Maybank/CIMB) | Free (Upwork side); bank FX spread ~2% | 2-5 days |
| PayPal | 2.9% + conversion markup | Instant |
| Payoneer | 1-3% | 1-2 days |
| Wise | 0.5-1.5% | 1-2 days |
Most experienced Malaysian freelancers use Wise for the best MYR exchange rates, or direct bank transfer for convenience.
SOCSO for Self-Employed
As a freelancer, you should register for SPS (Skim Persaraan Self-Employed) with SOCSO. This provides:
- Invalidity pension (if you become disabled)
- Survivors' pension (for your family)
- Contribution: RM 5-40/month depending on declared income
